Bacterial leaf blight disease is mainly managed by using resistant cultivars and systemic bactericides. However, natural resistance against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is rare. Breeding for resistance is complicated by the genetic diversity of the pathogen as well as the lack of resistant genes in rice. Chemical control of the pathogen is not always effective because the pathogens are prone to developing resistance to mismanaged chemicals. Induced resistance is based on the activation of the defense response prior to the challenge by pathogen throught the application of elicitors. The potential of some biotic and abiotic elicitors was evaluated for their ability to induced resistance to the bacterial leaf blight of rice under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. Under laboratory condition, abiotic elicitors had no direct effect, but biotic elicitors had antagonistic effects on Xoo. The biotic and abiotic elicitor differentlly increased the percentage of grain germination, the root length, the shoot height. In addition, the elicitors reduced disease severity under greenhouse condition. Salicylic acid applied using seed coat and foliar spray at 15, 30 and 45 DAI had the highest reduction of disease severity at 33.25%, significantly different from the control treatment.
