Looking forward to the next five years

n 2021, Can Tho University commemorates the 55 anniversary of establishment

I(March 31 , 1966 - March 31 , 2021). Also in this year, the University starts the
th
implementation of the 12 Party Committee Congress’s Resolution, the second term of
the Board of Trustees, and the new term of the Rectorate Board. Especially, undertaking
autonomy in some aspects, i.e. finance, in accordance with the new laws issued is
expected to bring the University many changes, opportunities, and challenges as well.
Therefore, Can Tho University has been preparing for its breakthroughs in the next five
years to achieve the further development and perform its important role in the socio-
economic development of the Mekong Delta region in particular and the country in general.

Looking back over the past years, Can Tho University has made outstanding
achievements that can be reviewed as follows:

1. The University was ranked in the top 5 best universities in Vietnam (by Webometrics)
and in the group of 500 best universities in Asia (by QS Asia University Rankings),
especially, the subject of Agriculture and Forestry (Animal Science, Cultivation, and
Fisheries) was placed first in Vietnam and debuted at the 251-300 in QS World University
Rankings by Subject 2020; Can Tho University was the only Vietnamese representative in
the list.

2. The positive changes in quality of education, scientific research and technology
transfer have been recorded; the number of scientific publications has increased over the
years, specifically, publications in Scopus indexed journals surpassed 500 articles last
year;

3. Domestic and international cooperation activities are strengthened; comprehensive
cooperation agreements were signed with localities in the Mekong Delta; cooperative
relations with a lot of international institutes, universities and organizations were
maintained and expanded;
4. There was a significant increase in qualified staff; 100% (over 1,000) of lecturers
gained graduate qualifications, and nearly 45% lecturers obtained doctorate degrees; 158
was the number of professors and associate professors;
5. Facilities were constantly invested; it is notable that the results from Can Tho
University Improvement Project with a total budget of 105,9 million USD funded by ODA
loans from the Japanese Government through JICA will greatly enhance the appearance
and upgrade the quality of the University in the coming years.

Looking forward to the next five years, in the Resolution of Party Committee’s 12
Congress, Can Tho University determined “Can Tho University is going to be a pioneer in
innovation, education, scientific research, and technology transfer to effectively contribute
to the development of the region and country; with the capacity of education and scientific
research promoted, the University will stand in the group of leading universities in Asia and
