ABSTRACT

Responsible tourism has emerged as a critical approach in balancing the economic, social, and environmental aspects of the tourism industry. Can Tho, a prominent city in the Mekong Delta of Southern Vietnam, boasts a diverse cultural heritage and peaceful natural landscapes, providing an ideal setting for exploring responsible tourism practices and their impact on local communities. This research sought to identify innovative approaches to responsible tourism in Can Tho that empower local communities, promote sustainable development, and foster collaboration between the tourism industry and community stakeholders. A mixed-methods research design was employed, integrating qualitative data from in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with key stakeholders, along with quantitative data from surveys administered to tourists and residents. A comparative analysis of successful internationally responsible tourism models was also conducted to derive insights applicable to the Can Tho context. The study uncovered various innovative approaches to responsible tourism in Can Tho, including community-based initiatives, skill development programs, and environmentally-conscious practices. These approaches were found to contribute significantly to empowering local communities, enhancing their quality of life, and promoting sustainable economic development. Collaboration between the tourism industry and community stakeholders emerged as a vital factor in maximizing the benefits of responsible tourism. The findings emphasized the transformative potential of responsible tourism in Can Tho, Vietnam, to empower local communities and foster sustainable development. This research offered practical recommendations for stakeholders to implement innovative approaches and cultivate effective partnerships that ensure the long-term success of responsible tourism initiatives.
