Event tourism (ET) has emerged as an important driver of local economic development and community engagement worldwide. This study aims to assess the impact of ET on local economic growth and community engagement in Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Vietnam. The city is renowned for its vibrant cultural events, such as the Hoi An Lantern Festival and the Hoi An International Food Festival. The purpose of this research is to provide insights into the direct and indirect benefits and challenges associated with ET in Hoi An. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative data from secondary sources, such as tourism statistics and government reports, with qualitative data obtained through semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, including policymakers, local businesses, and community members. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, content analysis, and thematic analysis to identify patterns and relationships among various factors influencing the impact of ET. The results reveal that ET has contributed significantly to Hoi An's economic growth, generating revenue, creating jobs, and stimulating investment in infrastructure and related sectors. Furthermore, ET fosters community engagement by involving residents in event organization, cultural preservation, and social cohesion. However, the study findings also uncover potential challenges, such as overcrowding, environmental degradation, and unequal distribution of benefits. Finally, given the outcomes of the study, numerous recommendations were proposed for improving the sustainability and efficiency of ET at this destination. Overall, this research offers valuable insights into the complex interplay between ET, local economic growth, and community engagement in Hoi An. The findings as well as proposed practical implications have important implications for policymakers, businesses, and local communities in developing strategies to maximize the positive effects of ET while mitigating potential negative impacts.
