The objectives of this research were to isolate and select lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from skin for the capacity of inhibiting the growth of three kinds of acne-causing bacteria, as well as to develop a probiotic mask in skin-care. Nine strains of LAB were isolated from 23 samples collected on face-skin areas of students in Tay Do university. By using the diffusion method testing on agar plates, the results showed that all these 9 LAB could perform the ability to inhibit the growth of three kinds of acne-causing bacteria including Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The only one strain of 05SL3 LAB was capable of inhibiting with clear-area distances from 18mm, 8mm, 8mm depending on kind of acne-causing bacteria tested. The inoculation of 05SL3 LAB strain was tested on acne-causing bacteria grown in trypticase and heart extract broth medium at 2, 4, 6, 12 ,24 and 30h incubation time. After 30h of incubation, the population of Staphylococcus aureus was reduced to 53,55%, and Staphylococcus epidermidis was reduced 58,04% in comparison to the control. The 05SL3 LAB strain was isolated from health skin area; rod-shaped; 2,26mm x 0,61mm; single or short chain; Gram-positive; oxidase and catalase negative; able to grow at 45oC; using glucose, lactose, or saccharose for growth. The 05SL3 LAB strain was antibiotic resistance such as: tetracycline, levofloxacin, erythromycin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, climdamycin, cefuroxime. By using the molecular biology technique, the 05SL3 LAB strain was identified and characterized as Lactobacillus plantarum. The optimization conditions and stabilization of 05SL3 Lactobacillus plantarum biomass will be further examined and defined.
