Organic waste is a big concern not only in Soc Trang Province but also in many other cities and provinces in Vietnam. Organic waste causes environmental pollution, affects human health. Especially, organic waste also contains pathogens. Therefore, isolation and selection of good biodegradable cellulolytic bacteria are an urgent need. Several solid and liquid samples from organic waste storage stations in Tran De, Ke Sach and Nga Nam districts were collected. Wastewater from rice vermicelli factory was also collected. Cellulolytic bacterial strain were isolated in medium containing Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a sole carbon source. The results from our study showed that twenty six bacterial strains isolated from organic waste had various morphologies. Their colonies were round or irregular, entire margin and convex or raised elevations. Diameter of colonies varied from 0.2-2.0 mm after 3 days of incubation at 30oC. Strain NC 9 isolated from Nga Nam district and KC 2 isolated from Ke Sach district were motile since they had flagella (flagella could be seen under SEM at magnification of X8,000-X10,000). Seventeen strains had gram positive and 9 strains had gram negative. They were all positive catalase. All of isolated strains could degrade CMC (10g CMC/L medium). The results from 16S rDNA sequencing analysis showed that promising strains KC 2 and NC 9 were identified as Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus cereus, respectively.
