Tạp chí: ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING FOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT: Empowering Voices of Linguistic Learners
Liên kết:

In recent years, there has been an increase in demand for workers with mastery over both specialized skills and employability skills among both Vietnamese and foreign employers. In response to this, much research related to employability skills have been conducted. However, information specifically about students’ points of view about these skills are still scarce. This study, therefore, aimed to investigate learners’ opinions on obstacles, applicability, and their own competencies regarding employability skills. A total of 82 students from the 44th course of the Foreign Language Department at Can Tho University have been surveyed via questionnaires in this study. In addition, 13 of them have been asked to attend semi-structured interview sessions. Data from the questionnaires were analyzed using the statistical software SPSS version 20.0 while data from semi-structured interviews were inspected using Raymond Padilla’s unfolding matrix qualitative analysis technique. The results from this study reveal that generally, students view themselves as proficient in most areas of employability skills. However, certain specific aspects of employability skills are notably considered to be more difficult, specifically: conflict resolution, public speaking, presentation, long-term career goal planning, decision making, multitasking, and time management. In addition, the data from this research project have been used to put forward possible measures to improve the participants’ employability skill-related classes.
