Lignin derived from coir pith in Mekong Delta was firstly extracted using a non-heating soda extraction process. Effects of pH, NaOH concentration, extraction time on extraction performance were conducted. Purity and identification of extracted lignin were determinated by using UV-Vis and FTIR method. SEM image was used to evaluate morphology of lignin particles. Everage molecular weight of lignin was calculated using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) method. Thermal analysis of lignin was conducted by applying thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) method and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) method. Experimental results showed that the amounts of extracted lignin from heating and non-heating process are similar, and high purity lignin was obtained in the later process. Lignin particles are in size of tens micrometer and shape of polyhedron with low porosity. Analytical results obtained from TGA, DSC and GPC methods showed that extracted lignin possesses high moleccular weight based on consisting of plenty of phenolic groups in its structure. The extracted lignin showed its potenital apllications in producing carbon fibers, composite materials and especially in blending and synthesizing polymer.
