This work provides a comprehensive view about the great potential of Vetiver System Technology (VST), mainly based on Vetiver grass, in remediating a wide range of polluted water and contaminated lands. It is useful for government, academia, industry and individuals in decision making about the application of VST for the environmental protection. Vetiver grass has been demonstrated through extensively scientific research that it possesses nearly all the characteristics of an ideal plant for the phytoremediation of water and soils contaminated by heavy metals and organic pollutants. It has a dense and massive root system, exhibits rapid growth, has high biomass production and high accumulation rate of heavy metals in roots (particularly lead, zinc and iron) and nutrients (specifically nitrogen and phosphorous), absorbs and promotes biodegradation of organic wastes (such as 2,4,6-trinitroluene, phenol, benzo[a]pyrene, atrazine, diuron and tetracycline), and also possesses high tolerance and adaptability to a wide range of weather, environmental and soil conditions. Particularly, the successful field studies of applying Vetiver around the world clearly illustrated by pictures have further confirmed that Vetiver grass is a right choice for phytoremediation of certain contaminated water and soils. The strong evidences from the scientific research and field studies presented in this paper have contributed to the promotion of using VST for the environmental protecting purposes. It in turn profits not only users but also local communities where Vetiver is cultivated. It is due to the fact that VST is an effective, non-expensive, easily implemented and environmentally friendly approach, and may generate the income sources for the locals through handicraft production, animal feeds and cooking fuels.
