The present study was designed to investigate the antidiabetic, antidyslipidemic and hepatoprotective activities of ethanol extract from leaves and stems of Cayratia trifolia (L.) Domin (CT extract) in alloxan-induced diabetic mice model. Diabetes was induced in mice by administration of alloxan monohydrate (135 mg/kg body weight/once a day in three day, intraperitoneal). Diabetic mice were treated with the extract of CT (200 and 400 mg/kg body weight/twice a day). Glucophage, diabetic commercial available drug, was used as a possitive control with dose of 108 mg/kg body weight/twice a day. Mice were administered with both glucophage and CT extract orally during 21 days. On the 21st day of the experiment, mice blood, liver and pancreas samples were collected to test biochemical parameters, antioxidant levels and histopathology. After 21 days of treatment, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels were significantly increased, whereas, body weight, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were markedly decreased in diabetic mice. Treatment with CT extract significantly restored these parameter to the normal level. The protective effect of CT extract was compared with glucophage, a well-known hypoglycemic drug. Moreover, a significant improved in the liver function markers in treated mice (decrease in alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST) and malondialdehyde (MDA); increase in reduced gluthation (GSH)) indicated the protective effect of the ethanolic CT extract against liver damage. Histopathologic results of CT extract treated groups revealed marked improvement in the morphology of pancreas compared to  the control diabetic group. These results suggest that Cayratia trifolia extract has potential antidiabetic, antidyslipidemic and antioxidant activities in alloxan induced diabetic mice. Therefore, administration of this plant would be very helpful in the prevention of diabetic complications.
